The project

Supply of biomasses, which uses resources according to a cascade approach and avoids their dispersion along the value chain

Zero Waste

Green Transition Hub integrates actors of two different supply chains, the cosmetics and the biomaterials supply chains, to develop different production lines starting from the same type of plant biomass.
• The extraction of vegetable oils from biomass and their conversion into bio-polyols for polyurethane formulations is supported by highly sustainable and low environmental impact steam explosion technology for the textile and automotive sector.
• The enhancement of residual biomass obtained from “exhausted” plant biomass after extracting oils to protein hydrolysates production for cosmetic formulations.
In this way, Green Transition Hub wants to encourage a growing number of producers to adopt sustainable and circular solutions in their production systems to favour their productive reconversion and transition to a green economy.

OBJECTIVES

1

Maximize

the use of agricultural waste through economy of scale by diversifying the supply of oil biomasses to ensure an integrated and parallel use of biomasses

2

Optimize

the use of by-products of the transformation of oil and lignocellulosic biomasses through a cascade approach and low environmental impact processes, improving the economic balance and the environmental impact of the supply chain

3

Demonstrate

the economic, financial, environmental and social sustainability of an integrated supply chain for the competitive production of cosmetic and biomaterial products by validating a complementary business model

4

Promote

the integration and alliance between producers of raw materials and the chemical-manufacturing sector, optimizing logistics costs and stimulating new business partnerships

ACTIONS

1

Selection and characterization of oil-bearing plant species suitable for the extraction of molecules of interest for the cosmetic and polymers sector

2

Extraction of vegetable oils and subsequent conversion into bio-polyols to produce a polyurethane formulation, also through steam explosion treatment

3

Development of an enzymatic process for extracting protein hydrolysates for the cosmetic sector starting from the residual biomass

4

Characterization and formulation tests of protein hydrolysates suitable for cosmetic applications

5

Evaluation of the environmental and social impacts of the biorefinery, integrated with the mapping of the cosmetics and polyurethane supply chain

6

Evaluation of Techno-economic aspects of the model and business plan implementation

7

Development of the digital platform for the sustainable supply of biomass to create a pole of shared valuable knowledge for all the players in the supply chain
